Valdez is a town of astounding beauty. Surrounded by the Chugach National Forest and multiple glaciers, Valdez has much to offer. The largest national park in the world, the Wrangell St. Elias Park and Preserve, is located close to the town. Both summer andwinter offer a variety of recreation for the people who live there.
Hundreds of miles of trails with wild flowers and wildlife are available in the mountains. Ice and snowmelt from the glaciers create sensational waterfalls. The town receives the most snowfall in Alaska each year with an average of 300 inches. This makes the skiing and snowboarding some of the best the world has to offer. Tourists flock from around the globe to ski in the back country by helicopter or snowcat.
Valdez is a major seaport. Tons of commercial and sports fishing takes place in the Prince William Sound. Locals often fish right of the dock or take small boats for some of the finest fishing that Alaska has to offer. Otters, whales, bears, moose, and tons of other wildlife can be seen in the bay, harbor, and surrounding wilderness.
Homes and real estate are less expensive than most other places in Alaska. Valdez is a smaller town, but homey and with everything anyone could require. This is a great place to own a home if you enjoy the sea and want to live away from the business of a city life.
The schooling is great due to the oil companies providing for the education system, and graduates are able to attend the local community college for free. Valdez is a fantastic community when looking to find that Alaskan small town feeling.
